Coach Storm’s EMass Pre-Season Top 25
Written by Tom Hellen
December 9, 2008Somerville MA – Okay here we go again…trying to make sense of what teams lost what players; who has the most back; who has trouble with injuries; what coaching changes were made and so on. Didn’t it seem like the last 3 or 4 years the top teams were deep and had the same core of players back all the time…the Archies with Duffy, Capello, Black and more, Andover with Thomann, Renfro, Hughes, and the Fantinis, Spellman with Santos, Poirier, Schlehuber and Barry, Masco with Stewart, Burns, Deangelis etc; and Lowell had Rivera, Cavannaugh, and so on. This season will be interesting as most of the good teams seem to have 2 VERY good players and then newcomers stepping in to the fray who lack game experience. Central Catholic is one exception and that’s why they get the top spot in pre-season. Pentucket and Reading return all 5 starters so they slide into #2 and #3. See if you notice below how many of the Top 25 teams have 2 stars.
You will note that I have a bunch of teams in the “On the Cusp” section as again, there are many teams with many question marks and yet have 2 quality players. I expect with all the uncertainty this year that we’ll have much movement from “On the Cusp” into the Top 25 and vice versa…That’s why they play the games folks and why it’s gonna’ be a very interesting season.
I hope you enjoy the rankings I’ve compiled and always feel to e-mail me at coachstorm5@comcast.net with any comments. Send me a blurb or two also if you feel like I missed your club or didn’t have enough information there…always willing to learn about good teams and good players especially from the South. Then I can try and catch them play this winter. Enjoy the games folks!
Pre-Season Top 25 Rankings
Now Last Year

#1. #24.
Central Catholic (D1 N) – 16 – 8 They return arguably the BEST player in the state in 6’ 3” Katie Zenevitch who has already verballed to BC as a junior. “Arnold” may have been “The Terminator” but Katie will this year be “The Dominator.” She can hit the “3”, bang the boards, block shots…you name it…she will be doing it this winter. Melissa Miller and Gabie Polce are now sophs who won’t have any learning curve like last year. They’ll be contributing right from the get-go. Seniors Gia O’Connor and Kelley Mikus are solid on both ends of the court though Mikus is out for 3 more weeks with a thumb injury. Ashley Evangelista gives them super quickness while 6’ 1” soph Kendall Desrosiers gives them some size off the bench. Sue Downer is an excellent coach with tons of tourney experience. They have the tough MVC schedule plus they will try and defend their Comcast title against Pentucket, Walpole, and Bishop Feehan so the Raiders will be battle tested. With Katie as “The Dominator” me thinks this club will be doing the dominating in EMass. |

Pentucket (D3 N) – 21 – 3 This program has taken giant steps each year and I think this year they’ll reach the mountaintop. Will the 3rd time at the Garden be a charm for the Sachems? Time will tell but you have to like their chances. Coach McNamara returns 6 of his top 8 players including all their entire starting 5 and those 5 are very, very good. Kirsten Daamen (D1 Central Conn.) is the stopper at 6’ 2” with that incredible wingspan…simply the best shot blocker in the state. Junior Ashley Viselli is the scorer and she is very good at what she does. Andrea Attenasio gives them that solid all-around play you need up front and Erin McNamara at the point is like having a coach on the floor. All 4 were CAL all stars. They are a year older…a year better…and if they can get out of the North…could go all the way in D3 this year. |
#3. #12. |
Reading – (D2 N) -- 19 – 5 Rockets finally got over the hump and beat Melrose…not once but twice in 1 season and ended up getting to the Tsongas in the North final. Kim Penney’s troops return 5 high quality seniors. Jackie Lyons is heading to D1 UNH while sharpshooting Cat Carey is going to play at Mt. Holyoke. They are extremely well coached…they have the star in Lyons who also runs the show at the point…Carey gives them the “3” ball (7 against Melrose in the state’s) Stager also showed she can nail it from beyond the arc and also bang inside…Rafferty and Pandolfo are stoppers on “D” and score a little when needed… 6’ Soph Carlene Kluge looks much more comfortable on the court and will contribute a lot more this winter. Rumor has it that a 5’ 10” frosh could also help this winter and wouldn’t that be a nice surprise. This club will be a tough out come tourney time. The entire team is very athletic…they defend… they work real hard….rebounding will be a key but if the Rockets can handle the boards they have the right ingredients and the right recipe to go real far in 2009. |
#4. #4. |
Lowell (D1 N) – 19 – 3 Only 3 losses last year were to bitter MVC rival Andover…I think they get some payback this year. They lost superstar Ashley Rivera and underrated Meghan Cavanaugh but the cupboard’s far from being bare. Start with the senior twin towers (literally “twins” and literally “towers” at 6’ 3”) in Briana and Whitney Wilson who and Coach Mike Crowley begins to smile…add in sharpshooting 3 point bomber senior Kara Rogers and an improved 6’ 1” soph in Tess Cigliano and the smile gets a little wider. Solid senior Maggie Wallace takes over at the point and should prove to be a very good floor general…now Crowley starts to laugh out loud…Lowell is going to be very strong again this winter. They also beat Central Catholic twice last year so they should have no fear going up against the #1 club twice this winter. They have that tough MVC schedule and also play a very interesting non-league match with Swampscott. Though the Comcast Tourney looks super in February, you will also want to head out to Acton to see the Roche Brothers tourney later during school vacation as Lowell and Acton do battle with AC and Reading in the other match…4 clubs with Top 10 potential…I’ll be heading out to see that tourney also. |
#5. #5. |
Bishop Feehan (D2 S) – 22 – 1 Only blemish was to eventual D2 state champion Wellesley last year and that was it. Holy Cross bound Amy Lepley is a terrific talent and Jenn Roncarati’s (Providence for soccer) got the nice ups on her “J” and is an excellent “ying” to Lepley’s “yang.” They have the high from the Garden experience of 2 years ago and also the low from last year’s loss to eventual state champ Wellesley. Last year should be a big motivator for this club. The schedule is strong this year with a home and home against the Archies, 2 with Durfee, RI power Lasalle Academy, and then they do battle in the Comcast next February…nice way to get ready for the state tourney. |
#6. #6. |
Wellesley (D2 S) – 23 – 3 They lost quality seniors in Lindsay Sydness (Principia College in IL), Chelsea Sanders and Eleni Dixon (both in prep school) who were key components in their D2 state title run. The cupboard’s far from bare though as they return two excellent young guards with Mary Louise Dixon at the point and the soph shooter Blake Dietrick…Stir in the inside power game of Jesse Miller and you have a nice mix to defend your title. The tough coach who stirred this pot to perfection is Kristin Cieri and she did an outstanding job last year. She’ll have her work cut out as Wellesley will be at the top of every team’s big game of the year list…the bullseye will be on their backs all year. The league schedule will be tough but with only a home and home against Belmont (who lost a lot of talent) for non-league games, I wonder if this team will be tournament tested come late February? Nice problem to have though and I think the mental toughness these kids acquired last winter will serve them well come late February. |
#7. #14. |
Walpole (D2 S) -- 21 – 3 Lost 3 times last year by a total of 12 points and two were to D2 state champ Wellesley. Last year’s excellent leader Caroline Stedman (Amherst) is gone but a strong junior class led by Sarah Roof and Sydni Salvatore are coming back so the Rebels will again contend with the likes of Wellesley and Feehan to win the D2 South title this year. The schedule has the tough Bay State league foes and then they do battle in the Comcast and their own Rebel Hoop Classic in February. |
#8. #19. |
Westford (D2 N) 18 – 4 – The Grey Ghosts may have the most depth in EMass as they have a lot of kids who can play. This can be a blessing but also a curse as Coach Russ Coward has to try to find playing time for all of them. Junior DCL all star Asia Ewing is a stud and a tough athletic inside presence and will be the go-to person. Senior tri-captains Kira Ross at the point, Jen Normandie at the off guard, and 6’ 1” Melissa Stanvick in the middle all have tons of experience as they enter their 4th year on varsity. Hard luck shooter Lauren Gallant is expected back in February. AB will give them all they can handle in the DCL. The Masco Xmas Tourney will be tough with AC and Londonderry, NH. They also lace ‘em up in the St. Mary’s February tourney with Peabody, Andover, and Lynn English. If they can avoid the injury bug, they could be at the Tsongas in the ZD2 North finals. |
#9. #9. |
Acton Boxborough (D1 N) -- 18 – 3 The Colonials graduated 5 excellent players including all-around dynamo Katy Rossino but return a strong senior class led by 5’ 7” Katie Awiszus. This clever point guard however is coming off ACL surgery and expects to be cleared in early December but getting the rust off will take some time. Great kid…hope she comes back 110%. Senior 6’ 1” Greta Pszenny is a solid 6’ 1” inside presence but needs to stay out of foul trouble. Senior Lauren O’Brien at 5’ 11” is a tough all-around player. Senior 5’ 10” Jess Dorey can play up front or in the backcourt. Throw in 5’ 10” juniors Sarah Teebagy and Deirdre Horan and you can see size is not a problem…they really need Katie though to run the show. The schedule is tough with Westford and L-S in the DCL plus 2 with powerful Holy Name of Worcester and then starting with tough Lowell in their own Roche Brothers February Tourney that also has Reading and AC. |
#10. Cusp |
Arlington Catholic (D2 N) – 15 - 8 They return star forward Merri Soper (D1 Bryant) who at 5’ 11” can knock down the 18 footer then blow by you and go strong to the goal. She’s 100% healthy this year so look for a big winter from Soper. Fellow senior Kelsey Roberson has looked excellent in off season play. Kid can hit the “3,” handle the rock and is quick as lightning. Junior Lindsey Roche is a 5’ 7” combo guard who has a nice stroke and should come into her own this year. Cara Paladino at the small forward will get significant minutes. Look for soph Kayla Awiszus (yep…Katie’s cousin) at 5’ 11” to help Soper on the glass. Tough league schedule as always with the Archies, Spellman, Fenwick, St. Mary’s and then the Masco Xmas Tourney and off to Acton in February to meet Reading in the Roche Bros. Tourney. |
#11. Cusp |
Oliver ames (D2 S) – 16 – 5 Must have been disappointing to lose in the 1st round of the tourney but don’t look for that to happen again. Coach Laney Clement-Holbrook has a ton back led by “LB.” That would be junior do-it-all Lauren Battista, a 6’ kid who can score inside and out, rebound, defend and best of all in my eyes she is a very unselfish player who sees the court so well. Add in the strong senior presence of 5’ 8” Alex Chace, another multi-skilled player, the inside presence of 6’ 1” junior Tessa Dern, the Vatallaro sisters, and seniors Kelly Duggan and Sarah Segill, plus junior point Jackie Bliss and this team has talent and some good depth. They should be the favorites to win the Hock and they are in the Walpole Rebels February Tourney and it would be a very interesting tilt if they meet fellow D2 South power Walpole there. |
#12. #21. |
Melrose (D2 N) – 18 - 4 They are there every year as evidenced by 9 straight regular season Middlesex League championships. They graduated another good one this year as Meghan Kirwan has moved on to UMass Lowell. They do return a strong club however with an excellent junior class. 5’ 10” Siena Mamayek is so tough scoring inside and should be the go-to person. She’ll get some good feeds from point guard Colleen Hanscom who is one of the hardest workers around and will reap the benefits of all her off-season labor as I think she’ll have an excellent junior year. Add in the inside power of 5’ 10” Hannah Brickley and ??? and you see why I again like the Red Raiders. Their 2 league tilts with Reading will be doozies and they play in the Peabody Xmas Tourney as well. |
#13. #17. |
Swampscott (D3 N) – 18 - 4 Talented crew returns 4 starters for this winter including the dynamic duo of Allie Beaulieu (Ms. Outside) and Tara Nimkar (Ms. Inside). Add in fellow senior Marissa Gambale and junior Kara Gilberg and the returning nucleus is outstanding. With this talent and experience this club will give Pentucket all it can handle in D3 North. The schedule has the tough Haverhill Xmas Tourney and they get their road game at Winthrop early while the Vikings are still banged up so that will help. |
#14. #1. |
Archbishop Williams (D3 S) – 24 – 4 – The Archies’ were the top club last year and have won back-to-back D3 state titles. It takes great talent to accomplish such a feat and they had that in Duffy, Capello, Black, LaFond, McNamara, and McDonough but they have all graduated. 6’ 4” junior Val Driscoll does return and this kid is a stud who is getting strong D1 college interest. Senior Alex Knowles at 5’ 11” has good experience as well but Coach Jim Bancroft really needs her to stay healthy this winter. 5’ 11” junior Erica Knowles and 5’ 9” Colleen Downing also return. A strong class of frosh may be asked to contribute early to fill some key roles. The schedule has the always tough league foes like AC and Spellman plus tough non-league battles with Feehan (2), NDA of Hingham (2), and February Hall of Fame Tourney with Spellman and Bridgewater. Coach Bancroft loves a tough slate of games to get his team tourney tested so the record may not be super but I think the frosh will mature and the Archies’ will be a tough out come late February. |
#15. #23. |
Whitman Hanson (D2 S) – 18 – 5 This talented team beat D1 South champ New Bedford twice last year and they return 1,000 point scorer Emily Trapp (D2 Saint Rose). Trapp is the star and she’s a good one but she will get some great help from fellow senior 5’9” Ali Hardiman who has an excellent all-around game. They get New Bedford twice again this year so those will be interesting and they head to the Mansfield Tourney in February and open with Dartmouth. They kept one tilt with Rockland, their perpetual nemesis and also travel to Duxbury in an interesting battle. |
#16. #3. |
Cardinal Spellman (D3 S) – 22 - 2 They just couldn’t beat the Archies’ last year suffering their only 3 defeats to them. Coach Pat Lamb now must deal with the graduation of O’Kane (Stonehill), Santos and Barry and the transfer of Schlehuber to prep school won’t help the cause this year either. 5’ 11” senior Reilly Poirier (So. Conn.) is back and she is a top quality kid, a 4 year starter, and will be a great leader as they transition. |
#17. N/R |
Coyle Cassidy (D3 S) – 11 – 10 – This club has steadily progressed and is now ready to be a player in D3 South. I saw them in the Stonehill summer tourney and they looked solid. Later in the summer they got to the finals of the Assumption tourney and beat a very good Millbury team (D2 state finalist) along the way. They return 2 excellent and very athletic talents in 5’ 11” senior Allie Pavao up front and she is a “double double” girl each and every night scoring 13 PPG with 11 boards last year. She also averaged over 3 blocks a game as well. Then you have budding soph star Brenna Gonsalves, a 5’ 10” guard who absolutely flies when she pushes the ball up the court. All she did as a frosh was average close to 13 points a game with 7 boards. Her quick hands got her more than 3 steals a game as well. The schedule includes 2 against league favorite Bishop Feehan and this will tell us how good the Warriors are. They also have rivalry games with cross town Taunton and 2 good matchups with B-R. They are also in the Weston Xmas Tourney. |
#18. Cusp |
Ipswich (D3 N) – 17 – 4 The controversial call(s) that ended their season will hopefully make them mentally tougher this winter. They have 4 starters coming back including 6’ 1” Audrey Shaughnessy, all-everything forward Amber Smith (D1 Maine) plus promising soph Hannah O’Flynn so the Tigers look solid on paper. The key will be the health of Amber Smith…saw some rumors of a possible stress fracture situation and all bets are off if she is sidelined. Two tough road games headline the schedule as they are at #2 Pentucket and also travel to always tough Wilmington. They are hosting their own Xmas Tourney and again play in the excellent St. Mary’s tourney in February. |
#19. #22. |
Winthrop (D3 N) – 19 – 5 The Lady Vikings have a new Coach in Dave Nagle but the hoop gods have not been friendly so far. 6’ 2” improved soph Johnna Fisher had knee surgery and should return around Xmas. Star 5’ 10” senior Rina Mallios had an appendectomy is also out until mid December. That leaves it all on Bentley bound do everything senior Courtney Finn who may see some triple teams early on. The 5’ 9” Finn is a 1st team Cream of the Crop player so she’ll find a way to hold the club up until her help is healthy again. |
#20. N/R |
Notre Dame of Hingham (D2 S) – 14 – 8 Interesting club to watch as they return 8 players with lots of experience. Most interesting returnee is senior point guard Sam Witham who missed her entire junior season with an injury. Add her in with fellow senior guards Jess Aruda (Babson bound?) and Kelsey Reilly and Coach Mike Barrett has talent, experience and depth in the backcourt. Senior post Margaret Riordan at 6’ 2” will open some eyes. Also expected to be key contributors are 6’ Lauren McClelland and feisty guard Kara Stefanaiak. Like last year, NDA will be facing some iron. 2 each with the Archies, Somerville, and Brockton plus Pentucket (Riordan vs. Daamen inside…hmmm) at home and a road match with Andover. Weymouth with 6’ 2” Sarah Collins in their own Xmas Tourney will be another super post matchup. They also travel to the Westwood tourney in February. |
#21. N/R |
St. Mary’s of Lynn (D3 N) – 9 – 13 Another team that might have a good run this winter is the one Coach Jeff Newhall will be putting on the court this year. He returns 3 starters including solid point guard and senior captain Amy Bozarjian with fellow senior Alison McCarthy at the off guard. Hard working Tori Faieta, a 6’ 2” soph center also returns after putting up some super numbers as a frosh by scoring 14 PPG with 13 boards and over 3 blocks a game…kid gets better all the time. Another soph I like a lot is 5’ 10” Cassi Amenta who will help inside. Senior co-captain Nicole Hanlon plays the 6th man role to a “T” and the hidden surprise will be junior transfer Bria Tiro who can light it up from anywhere on the court. The Catholic League is super tough plus Newhall has Gloucester, Georgetown, and Ipswich to deal with in his own tourney. Their record may have some losses but I think they make the tourney and will be a tough out come late February. |
#22. Cusp |
New Mission (D4 N) – 19 – 2 Cory McCarthy has switched to coaching the boys team but he leaves quite a crew coming back. Junior Mieshia Reynolds returns again to man the point. She will have her long time running mate 5’ 7” Niesha Kelley back at the off guard as well. Could be a breakout year for soph Khadidjah Ellison who at 5’ 7” has some serious “ups.” A strong freshman class will give this club more speed and excellent depth. The key will be rebounding as they lack that solid 6 footer to anchor the middle. Gotta' like them to be a favorite to win the D4 North and maybe win a 2nd state title. |
#23. Cusp |
Medway (D3 S) – 16 – 5 Mustangs faded late losing last 3 to end the year but don’t look for a repeat of that. 5’ 10” point guard Katy Howard is one reason as this Assumption bound kid can really play. With fellow senior 6’ 1” Elena Radzikowski inside to bang the boards and get the tough hoops, this club is the favorite in the Tri Valley League. The on-line schedule right now has 18 league games but none outside the TVL. That can be tough sometimes come tourney time when you haven’t ventured outside your league to get battle ready….time will tell. |
#24. Cusp |
Dighton Rehoboth – (D2 S) -- 17 – 5 In 6’ 2” Mary Nwachukwa they have a 1st team Cream of the Crop kid who is BC bound and was the leading scorer in EMass last year. D-R had an excellent season last year getting to the 2nd round of the states. The question will be do they have enough support players to get by Bourne in the league? They have their own tourney early and also play in the Walpole Tournament in February with Oliver Ames there as well…hmmm…playing OA or Walpole will tell a lot. |
#25. N/R
Somerville (D1 N) – 14 – 7 Okay…a little provincial here but what the heck. Yea they didn’t look good at Babson but Coach Brian Harris returns a veteran club with 7 seniors led by 5’ 9” forward Michelle Hagerty along with 5’ 6” Jill Liberatore at the point…both high quality kids. Kayla Vallery will be the off guard and is a streaky 3 point shooter. 6’ 3” junior Keisha Jean-Louis will man the middle and she keeps improving all the time. Whirling dervish soph Kelsey Garrity rounds out the probable starting 5 and she will be a key contributor this year as she flies all over the court. They will get depth from the likes of “JJ” Jean-Louis, Casey Kotzuba, Jenny Vallessio, Francesca Dalembert, and Marie Silva. The Lady Highlanders stay in the Top 25 may be short-lived as the schedule is tough. The shrinking of the GBL to 5 teams forced Harris to go out and get 12 non-league games and he has some interesting ones. 2 games each with AC, NDA of Hingham, Marshfield, and Lynn English plus single tilts with Haverhill and Billerica. They get O’Bryant and either Fontbonne or Needham in their own Xmas Tourney. |
On the Cusp
Dedham (D3 S) – 14 – 8 Any club with underrated 5’ 11” senior Jill Moses and 5’ 8” guard Andrea Vogt playing for them will be a factor. |
Brockton (D1 S) – 17 – 5 Just couldn’t beat rival New Bedford last season. They will miss super star Taryn Johnson now at D1 Fairfield. Boxers are always good so we’ll see what they bring to the table this year. |
Andover (D1 N) – 23 – 4 – Graduated 10…that’s right ten seniors including Thomann (Bentley), Renfro (Williams), and Hughes but do return super soph Natalie Gomez and she has worked hard on her game and it shows. Add in much touted frosh Boudreau and junior forward Alex Alois and Coach Jim Tildsley has something to work with. They always defend so it will keep them in games…scores will be more like 42 to 38 this year…club still lacks size and now experience but will make the tourney and we’ll see how quickly they develop. |
Masconomet (D2 N) – 20 – 2 Top club year in and year out but they graduated 3 starters including stars Annie Burns (Bates), Merry DeAngelis (Suffolk), and Caroline Stewart (BU). Dynamic Jamie White returns and so does Krissy De Benedetto but other than that the club will be young and lacking game experience…how fast they mature will be the key. |
Weymouth (D1 S) – 14 – 6 This club has a stud in the middle in 6’ 2” senior Sarah Collins (Babson) who has really come on and should have a super senior season. This club could surprise some people this winter. |
Bourne (D3 S) – 13 – 8 This Cape Cod crew returns a solid group. Start in the middle with Courtney Donovan who is 6’ 2” (UMass Lowell possibly?) and very athletic. The guard duo of junior Ryan Chase who can defend with anyone and soph point guard Alison O'Kane (Cori’s younger sister) will be solid. Coach Bob Sullivan also has a quick forward about 5’ 10” that I liked but not sure of her name. The schedule is favorable with 2 against Mary N and Dighton Rehoboth as the biggest challenges. They are not in any tough tournaments which could come back to haunt them come the states…will they be battle ready?? |
Bridgewater-Raynham (D1 S) -- 12 - 7 Coach Nickie Orlando returns tons of experience with 9 seniors back led by the Marotta sisters, Nicole and Samantha plus 6’ 1” Kellie O’Neill inside. Club is well coached and will be a factor in D1 South in the states. |
Franklin (D1 S) – 18 - 4 Panther had a great run but lost a solid senior class led by possibly their best player ever in Kelly Meredith now at Assumption. Ashley, her younger sis returns and at 6’ will be asked to lead the transition this winter. Heather Fitzgerald returns from last year’s injury and Katie Kalutkiewicz is a 6’ kid who will help inside. Katelyn Iafolla will open things up with some 3’s as well. Coach John Leighton’s ladies could surprise as they looked very good in the Babson Tourney recently. |
Peabody (D1 N) – 16 – 6 Another club that lost a lot of seniors…7 graduated to be exact. Also, the hoop gods are not being very nice here either as junior sharpshooter Carissa Milley will miss another year with her 2nd ACL surgery. This poor kid has no luck. Senior point guard Alyssa Manoogian had the same bad luck with her ACL. This leaves a gaping hole in the backcourt but they do return All Star Janelle Rodriguez up front and she is a good one. Tough NEC schedule plus they open with Melrose in their own Xmas Tourney and also visit the tough St. Mary’s Tourney in February. Big challenges ahead for Coach Jane Heil but Jane loves a good battle so let’s see where the Tanners are come tourney time. |
Sacred Heart (D4 S) – 20 – 2 Great year as they dominated everyone except losing to Coyle by 2 during regular season. They return outstanding senior Molly Cahill who can do it all. |
Lincoln-Sudbury (D2 N) – 21 – 4 Coach Liza Feldman has had a terrific run but losing another great class to graduation including Wetmore (RPI), Kearse (Bentley), Donaldson, Cakert, and Linke and so this year is one big question mark. Junior 3 point shooter Liz Newman returns and sophs Bridget Mahoney and Lindsey Jones got good experience last year. Club will be young but hard working and we’ll see how this turns out for Coach Feldman. |
Lynn English (D1 N) – 12 – 9 Coach Freddie Hogan has slowly built this program and should start seeing some dividends this winter. He returns star junior guard Jenicia Duggins and senior rebounder supreme Jeanette Anderson who truly pounds the glass and goes and gets the rock with the best of them. Sophs Miranda and Lashaunda Hogan will also be coming into their own this winter. |
New Bedford (D1 S) – 19 – 6 Got to the Garden last year but graduated quality seniors in Houtman and Depina (both at Bridgewater State), and Johnson. 5’ 11” soph forwards Torie Manny and Ariell Gomes plus 5’ 11” Brittany Mello look promising and transfer point guard Devon Carter will be a big help but we need to watch this club for a while to get a handle on them. |
Cohasset (D4 S) -- 22 – 3 Club lost in the state finals and they return all 10 players who suited up at the Garden. Club is led by sisters Sammi and Tori Lehr…Sammi is 6’ 1” and baby sis Tori is 6’ 2” so you know the inside game will be there. Millis and Sacred Heart will be tough in the South but got a feeling this team will be back at the Garden again. |
Stoneham (D3 N) -- 10 – 11 Club lost in the state finals b returns Gina Sicuso inside and she’s a good one. They played well over at the Babson tourney. Could be a surprise in the Middlesex League. |
Canton (D2 S) – 11 – 9 Got to watch this team as they have the 2 stars in Brianna Trabucco in the backcourt with 6’ 2” Colleen Moriarty up front. |
Newton North (D1 S) – Didn’t make the tourney last year but I think they’ll be in this time. With the Wynn sisters and I thought Megan Gentile at 5’ 11” played well at Babson. |
Durfee (D1 S) – Did not make the tourney last year but another team with 2 certified stars in clever junior point guard Kate McDonald and 6’ 1” Lauren Fiola inside. Heard a rumor Fiola missed a scrimmage and I know she had an injury during AAU…hope the kid is okay as she’s a good one. |
Georgetown (D4 N) – Club has talented Taryn O’Connell back and a good senior class…that’s a good recipe for success. |
Marshfield (D1 S) 11 – 11 – Soph Nicole Beresford is a 5’ 11” stud who averaged 20 PPG as a frosh…another team to watch how they progress. |
Fontbonne (D1 S) – Alexis Peters and Kara Nagle return and a strong backcourt is a great base to build on. Schedule is truly a test…2 each with Feehan, NDA of Hingham, Marshfield, and Sacred Heart plus Needham in the Somerville Tourney. |
Needham (D1 S) 12 – 9 – The Ganser sisters are the 2 stars here and they are good ones. Katie is a 6’ 1” senior and heading to D2 Merrimack. Christine is 5’ 11” and a banger inside. |
Class of 2008…How are they doing?
Kelly Meredith – D2 Assumption (6 – 2) – Kelly is playing 23 minutes per game as the “6th man” and scoring 7.5 PPG. Morgan Kendrew – D3 Brandeis (8 – 0) – She is the 1st player off the bench scoring 6.3 PPG in 20 minutes a night. Brandeis is ranked 12th in the country in D3. Jill Greenberg – D3 Williams (2 – 4) – Starting point guard playing over 33 minutes a game and scoring 13.5 PPG.
