Coach Storm’s
2008-2009 “Tom’s Top 40” First Team Position Name High School Class College Choice Guard Jackie Lyons Reading Senior UNH Guard Natalie Gomez Andover Sophomore Only a Soph Forward Mary Nwachukwa Dighton-Rehoboth Senior BC Forward Katie Zenevitch Central Catholic Junior “Verbal” BC Center Valerie Driscoll Archbishop Williams Junior Only a Junior “6th Man” Courtney Finn Winthrop Senior Bentley Jackie Lyons She is a terrific talent and a great kid. Missed her entire sophomore season with an ACL injury yet still managed to break the magic 1,000 point barrier this year. She topped the team in scoring with over 19 a game while handing out 6 assists. She led Reading to its 1st outright Middlesex League title in like 30 years and to the D2 North final before losing to AC. She was named to the Herald Dream team and Globe Super team this year and was a Globe All Scholastic as a junior. She will be a dream player for the UNH coaches the next 4 years with her ability, her work ethic, and her love of the game…Natalie Gomez was the ONLY returning Andover player with decent varsity experience this year and yet she led them to a terrific season. Her coach thinks she is the best player in the state. I don’t go quite that far yet (Katie Z is still around) but she is a super talent who really works hard at her game. This Herald Dream Teamer “averaged” close to a triple double with 15 PPG, 10 assists, and 8 boards each night…and she defends with 5 steals a game…BC bound Mary Nwachukwa might be the best all-around player ever to step on the court at D-R…She graduates as the 2nd leading all time scorer at the school with 1,589 points for a career average of 21.5 PPG…she was named to the Globe Super team for the 2nd time, the Herald Dream Team, and the South Coast Today Super Team. She is heading to BC next year… …Okay in 3 years of high school ball she’s been to 2 state title games and this year 6’3” Katie Zenevitch was a part of the D1 state title team…all she did in the 2 biggest games of the year was go for 31 with 21 boards at the Garden and then for 28 with 25 rebounds in the state championship!...amazing numbers…She was named to the Herald Dream Team and has twice been a Herald All Scholastic and the Globe Super Team..and one more year to go before she’s off to BC....The Archie’s 6’ 3” Val Driscoll pumped in about 20 a game this winter even though she was the focal point of every opponent’s defensive schemes. She had 4 triple doubles this year and the one she had against Franklin was off the charts with 31 points, 17 boards, and 14 blocks…now that’s a triple double!...She led her team back to the Garden for the 3rd straight season. This Herald All Scholastic is a physical force in the paint and is getting some serious D1 interest including Holy Cross…Winthrop’s Courtney Finn ends her career by scoring over 21 a game this winter and more than 1,700 points for her career. She was a Herald All-Scholastic for the 3rd time and was also selected to the Globe Super Team in 2008…This prototype shooting guard should be a fixture for 4 years at D2 power Bentley. Second Team Position Name High School Class College Choice Guard Katy Howard Medway Senior Assumption Guard Kate McDonald Durfee Junior Only a Junior Forward Emily Trapp Whitman-Hanson Senior Saint Rose Forward Amber Smith Ipswich Senior Maine Center Kirsten Daamen Pentucket Senior Central Conn. “6th Man” Lauren Battista Oliver Ames Junior Only a Junior Katy Howard is a point guard who can shoot the rock scoring over 18 PPG this season while also seeing the floor as a point guard handing out 7 assists per contest. She has led her team in scoring and assists all 4 years of her high school career. She was named the Tri Valley League’s 2009 MVP and both a Globe and Herald All Scholastic. She should have a great career the next 4 years at Assumption.…Kate McDonald is as clever a point guard as there is around…she can score…around 14 a game…dish the rock as she had about 7 assists a game…She broke her hand at the end of the season and it was no coincidence that Durfee didn’t win either of the games she missed…Emily Trapp is an athletic 6’1” kid who can score with the best of them. She was named to the Herald All Scholastic team for the 2nd time and a Globe All Scholastic this year as well. She scored over 1,600 points in her career. She will go down as perhaps the best player ever to suit up for W-H and is off to D2 Saint Rose in New York next fall…Amber Smith continued to fill up a stat sheet to the tune of 23 PPG including one contest where she hit for 43. She graduates as the all time leading scorer in Ipswich history and ended her career with over 1,800 points and also grabbing almost 1,100 boards. A Herald All-Scholastic the last 2 years Smith was named to both the Herald Dream Team and the Globe Super Team this year…She is heading to play up in lovely Orono for the D1 Maine Black Bears.…Pentucket’s Kirsten Daamen is 6’2” was simply the most feared inside defensive presence in the state…she also scored 12 PPG on the #4 ranked Pentucket club, one of the most balanced teams around…She was named a Herald All Scholastic this year and is off to D1 Central Connecticut next fall so now maybe high school opponents on the North Shore can drive to the basket again and not get dotted… Lauren Battista of OA is simply one of the best all-around players in the state…she scores at 23 points a game, rebounds, throws a great outlet pass, and best of all sees the floor and keeps her teammates all involved…the best part for Coach Laney Clement-Holbrook is this kid has another year left for OA…She was named a Herald All Scholastic this winter and whatever college gets her services when she graduates a year from now will be thrilled…could it be Bentley? This kid sacrificed her scoring somewhat this year for the good of the AC team but her passing was better than ever as I had her for 8 assists when they beat Westford by 2 in the states…she will be sorely missed by Coach Brady as she takes her talents to D1 Bryant next fall… Lauren Fiola is a “double-double” machine as she has averaged close to 17 points and 12 boards a game for both her sophomore and junior seasons…This year she also played in pain for half the season with a partially torn calf but never missed a minute…Coach Tony Martin is thrilled to have her back for another year at Durfee…Feehan’s Jenna Roncarati is a D1 scholarship kid going to Providence…the problem is it’s for soccer not hoops…when star Amy Lepley went down with a season ending injury, Jenna put her team on her shoulders and scored at the time a career high 17 points that night…she ended up averaging over 19 a game with like 12 rebounds for the season…I saw her go for 23 with 15 boards against Katie Z and Central…She was named to both the Herald and Globe All Scholastice teams this year…sure wish this kid could find a way to play 2 sports in college as she’s an outstanding hoopster. Injury Impacted Years Position Name High School Class College Choice Guard Amy Lepley Bishop Feehan Senior Holy Cross Guard Cat Carey Reading Senior Mt. Holyoke Guard Jamie White Masconomet Senior Undecided Guard Katie Awiszus Acton Boxborough Senior Rochester? I thought I would throw out these kids names for some special recognition as they were greatly impacted in their senior year by the injury bug…..Amy Lepley is simply one of the top 5 players in the state…unfortunately, we didn’t get to see this super star all that much as she blew out her knee in mid-December and missed almost the entire year. Holy Cross has to be thrilled she’s heading to Worcester for the next 4 years though…Reading’s Cat Carey was having an excellent senior year on perhaps Reading’s best team ever when she got mono forcing her to miss like the last 5 games and also the state tourney…you have to wonder how far Reading could have gone if she was healthy down the stretch as she was a huge contributor to Reading in the 2008 state tourney…Jamie White of Masco is so much fun to watch as her athleticism is off the charts…she had to be really frustrated as she got a very bad ankle sprain mid-way through the season, missed some games, but came back late and gave it her best shot…Acton Boxborough’s Katie Awiszus is a terrific kid and one of those pass 1st point guards I like…poor kid tore her ACL last May, rehabbed really hard and got back to playing this year and then did her other knee against Westford late in the year Honorable Mention Seniors -- Class of 2009 Position Name High School Guard Amy Ingraham Millis Guard Bridget Dullea Bishop Fenwick Guard Michaela Cosby Walpole Guard Bianca Flores New Mission Guard Angela Patterson Nantucket Guard Brianna Trabucco Canton Guard Jackie Enos Coyle Cassidy Guard Kelsey Reilly NDA of Hingham Guard Kara Rogers Lowell Guard Kelsey Olivere Braintree Guard Beatrice Atkinson Brockton Guard Devon Carter New Bedford Guard Sydni Salvatore Walpole Guard Sabree Rodriguez Brockton Guard Grace Rehnquist Sharon Guard Micaela Cyr Lexington Guard Molly Cahill Sacred Heart Guard Jill Liberatore (injured) Somerville Guard Kara Nagle Fontbonne Guard Liz O’Connor Milton Guard Andrea Vogt Dedham Guard Hallie Vitagliano Newton North Guard Jessica Arruda NDA of Hingham Guard Elise Ogawa Brighton Guard Nicole Marotta Bridgewater Raynham Guard Samantha Marotta Bridgewater Raynham Guard Jen Mc Brien Medfield Guard Jackie Kelley Matignon Guard Jen Normandie Westford Guard Courtney Burns Rockland Guard Nicole Zahoruiko North Andover Guard Alex Chase Oliver Ames Guard Krissy DiBenedetto Masco Forward Marissa Pendergast Medfield Forward Kelsey Craveiro Apponequet Forward Sarah Roof Walpole Forward Michaela Cosby Walpole Forward Shary Martinez Brighton Forward Gia O’Connor Central Catholic Forward Gina Sicuso Stoneham Forward Ashley Fox Medfield Forward Katie Ganser Needham Forward Caitlyn DeFrancisco Tewksbury Forward Allie Pavao Coyle Cassidy Forward Jill Moses Dedham Forward Andrea Attenasio Pentucket Forward Ali Hardiman Whitman-Hanson Forward Michelle Hagerty Somerville Forward Greta Pszenny Acton Boxborough Forward Alison Stager Reading Forward Mariah Wynn Newton North Forward Lauren O’Brien Acton Boxborough Forward Jesse Miller Wellesley Forward Nicole Zahoruiko North Andover Forward Samantha Briggs Foxboro Forward Rehema Strouble Foxboro Forward Sochitta Men Lynn Classical Forward Kelley Curley Duxbury Forward Katie Curley Duxbury Forward Lauren Dicarlo Bishop Fenwick Forward Melissa Stanvick Westford Center Colleen Moriarty Canton Center Margaret Riordan NDA of Hingham Center Elena Radzikowski Medway Center Whitney Wilson Lowell Center Sammi Lehr Cohasset Center Lara Bruni Bishop Fenwick Center Audrey Shaughnessy Ipswich Center Kelly O’Neill Bridgewater
